Easter Seals Summer Program |

Often times it is difficult to find a summer program that is suitable for a child with special needs that the parents are comfortable with. Some parents feel the only option for the child is to keep them at home. Other challenges in finding an appropriate summer program include concerns like their child getting lost in the centers because of overcrowding, centers not accepting children with special needs, and the child not wanting to attend. The summer program kicked off on June 8 and has been a wonderful success. The nine children enrolled have gone on fieldtrips to the movies, library, bowling, water parks, museum, Petco- where they adopted hermit crabs, and Krispy Kreme where they got a tour of the bakery. While at the center they prepared meals, baked goodies, watched videos, danced, arts and crafts, played board games, sports, worked on the computers and took pictures. The summer program Coordinators work together to create a program that helps to develop friendships, foster independence, and promote fun and relaxation. A satisfied parent said “my daughter now talks about her friends, is excited to get to the summer program, has someplace that she belongs to, and speaks even more than she ever did before.” We were able to provide a safe and fun place for all children and hope to build on this experience. Inclusion is where diversity is welcomed and celebrated.
